The Laying on of hands: Confirmed in the Spirit
The Sacrament of Confirmation

On the day on which the disciples went out filled with the Holy Spirit, they unexpectedly found the courage to proclaim their faith, the strength to give life to a Christian community and to follow what Jesus said and did. In the sacrament of Confirmation, with the laying on of hands by the bishop/priest and the anointing on the forehead with the sacred oil, we receive the same Holy Spirit within us and we are invited to go out into the world, as the apostles did.

Confirmation Dove

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Last weekend our Year Six students received the sacrament of Confirmation and on Monday morning lead the school in a prayer that celebrated the Gifts of the Spirit. They are: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord (Wonder). I sincerely hope they know how blessed we all are through the influence of the Spirit in our/their lives and that they call on those Gifts often.
Many thanks to Clare Broad, the Parish Sacramental Coordinator, the class teachers: Mrs Vagliviello, Mrs Burke, Mrs Hardwicke and Sr Joseph and our Assistant Principal Mrs Wandek, for preparing the children and planning and choreographing the masses. Thanks also to Fr Richard for his constant work in developing the faith of our students.

An Observation
I sometimes find myself, whether it be while sitting in a meeting, walking down the street or just driving to work, being aware that I have no idea of the inner feelings of those around me. Emotions masked by the etiquette of the situation they are in, it occurs to me that their inner feelings may be of happiness, excitement, sadness, worry, despair, etc. But, I, as an observer will never know.

In my role as Principal, a good number of people - parents, staff and sometimes students - find a need to confide in me the trauma playing out in their lives as they speak to me. Their issues range from personal health, marriage breakdown, the health, social or behavioural issues of family members to the family's financial collapse, and more. All hidden by a thin facade of normalcy.

For those of us not in this situation, I say, "Count your blessings." and offer a prayer of gratitude to the Spirit and then offer another of supplication on behalf of all those amongst us who are suffering in silence - and there are many more than you may think.

As an example, I give you the instance of the staff member who came up to me and asked for a couple of hours of leave because their doctor thought they could have a cancer and wanted more tests done. A couple of hours! Told me after those tests that it was benign but would require attention and then went back to the classroom. No-one would know!

Enrolments
Early next term I will be conducting enrolment interviews for the Kindy intake of 2019. Combined with this will be the opportunity to also have your child enrolled in the Pre Kindy class of 2018.
There is a limited number of places still available for Kindy 2018. OLG is a dominant contributor to the Sacred Heart College, Year Seven in-take each year as well as placing a good number of students at Newman College secondary campus.
Enrolment forms are available from the office or online at: olg.wa.edu.au

New Faces
We currently have a number of people undertaking work experience placements in the school and next term will also add a university student doing her long-term teaching practice in 2G, before entering the job market at the end of this year. Apart from being helpful in the development of these 'interns' by providing them with an experience that may impact on their career choices, our students also get the benefit of extra assistance in the classroom. Win, win!

This week we interviewed candidates for Mrs Tangifua's maternity leave replacement. Selecting the right staff members is one of our most crucial tasks in ensuring our children get a great education. Given that, I am very happy to welcome Miss Caitlin Manea as our newest member of staff. Caitlin has taught in a government school in Northam and is currently working at St Simon Peter Catholic School.

Building Progress
From the front gate it is easy to see the walls going up on Building One, which includes the Pre Kindy, Art and After School Care and Uniform Shop. The interior walls will be plastered and the exterior clad in limestone.
Building Two, two Kindy rooms downstairs and three Year Six classrooms upstairs, is beginning to rise

God bless

“The exchange with God becomes real for us in prayer:
by his Holy Spirit, God comes to dwell within us.
By his word and by the sacraments,
Christ gives himself to us. In return, we can surrender everything to him.”

OLG MINI VINNIES YOUTH GROUP
It's hard to believe that our Mini Vinnies Youth Group has only been together for two months. Our wonderful group of children have decided to focus on the following projects for the remainder of this year: Sleepout, Shopfront, Winter Appeal and Rangala. Along with these projects we will also be assisting our North Beach SVDP conference with any needs that come up.
How can our parish help?

WINTER APPEAL
We are taking donations of blankets, jackets, scarves and beanies- new or used, as long as they are clean and in good condition.

SLEEPOUT
On the 8th July our Mini Vinnies group will be holding a sleepout in the parish centre to raise money and awareness for homelessness. Over that weekend you will see our Mini Vinnies children rugged up outside the parish asking for donations to sponsor them as a group for their sleepout. Every dollar makes a difference.

POTS AND PANS
Currently SVDP is in desperate need of pots and pans- new or used.
If you are able to make a donation towards any of the above projects please bring into parish centre or contact Assunta: 0417 951 579.

Confirmation Thanksgiving and Commissioning – 3rd/4th June
At all masses this coming weekend children who were confirmed last weekend will have an opportunity to say thank you for the gift of Confirmation. Sacraments are gifts given to us by God so we can lead lives the way Jesus taught us.

First Eucharist Commitment
This weekend is the last opportunity for your children to make their commitment. Please arrive at mass early to let Father know that you are there to make commitment.

Parent/Child Workshop – 6th OR 8th June
Workshops will take place in the Parish Centre and sessions at 5 pm and 6.30 pm will begin on time. Please ensure you arrive 5 to 10 minutes before to register your attendance, write name tags and find a seat.

Reconciliation for First Eucharist Candidates
All children receiving their First Eucharist will need to go to Reconciliation before receiving the Blessed Sacrament for the first time. Father Richard and Father Mark will be hearing reconciliations during class time over the coming weeks.

Eucharist Thanksgiving – 1st/2nd July
This weekend gives all families an opportunity to say thanks to God for the gift of Jesus that we receive every time we come to mass. Without the hype and fuss of the previous weekend we can focus on what it means to receive Jesus. To have Jesus come and live inside us each time we receive him is a special gift given to us by God. Each time we receive Jesus in the Eucharist we come to know him a little more and learn to live lives as he taught us to.

Office Volunteer Wanted
Our Lady of Grace Parish is seeking a volunteer/s to help out in the office on a weekly basis. If you are available for 2-3 hours on a Wednesday or Thursday beginning 1st July and would like further information, please email Christine at north.beach@perthcatholic.org.au or ring 0411 273 572.

Grandparents’ Day Date Change: Please be advised that Grandparents’ Day will be held on Friday 1/9 (not 25/8 as was previously communicated). Can you please advise your families to Save The Date.

Cake stall Rep Required for 2017: Unfortunately both Kath and I need to hand over the roll of cake stall coordinator this year..... we require one or two parents to take over the coordinating of the cake stalls, usually run once a fortnight. It is a great opportunity to assist all classrooms as funds raised go directly to the teachers of those year groups. This is a fun and low key role that also enables you to meet new parents in our school community. If you are interested in having a chat and getting more info please call either Katherine Lamont (0417183060) or Adele Swan (0413126644).

Quiz Night: A big thank you to everyone who supported The Quiz Night on Friday night. It was a really fun night and a great success in raising around $9 000.

To all the families and businesses who donated our heartfelt thanks.

A big Thank You to everyone who came and helped set up and pack up. A special Thank You to our amazing Quiz Master Mr Peter Bullen who donated his time. Also to Kane Bullen, Vanessa Budas, Peta Taylor, Linda D’Vaz who all worked so hard on the night. Another big Thank You to Josh and Nic from Sacred Heart who volunteered and helped make the night lots of fun.

OLG Run for Fun commences Term 2

“OLG Run for Fun” is a free running club where kids of all ages and fitness levels can come together before school to run and exercise in a positive and supportive environment. Parents and grandparents are also welcome to come along for fitness and quality time with their children.

We all know running is a great way to get fit, but it offers so much more. Kids who exercise in the morning are generally more engaged and focussed during lesson time. Running clubs enable kids to build friendships and have fun. Running builds healthy hearts and minds and brings joy to children.

The Running Club is run by volunteer parents each Tuesday and Thursday morning during school terms and will commence on Tuesday 2nd May 2017. It will include some warm up activities and games and there will be a couple of running courses, of different lengths, around Charles Riley Reserve to suit different ages and fitness levels. There will be no free breakfast or awards - it’s just for participation and fun.

As the Running Club is run by parents, students in Year 3 or below must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to ensure adequate supervision. A permission slip will need to be completed before your child can participate. Permission slips will be available for signing at the first session your child chooses to attend.

Days:         Every Tuesday and Thursday morning (starting 2nd May 2017)
Start time: 7.40am to 8.15am (volunteer parents will then walk kids to school)
Where:       Meet at the south east corner of the football clubrooms at Charles Riley Reserve
What to bring: Drink bottle, sneakers and energy. Eat breakfast at home first or bring something to eat at school after the run.
Cost:          Free
More Info:  Contact Damian Hicks on 0419 930087 or email dhicks@iinet.net.au
Volunteers: Bendotti, Nelson, Curtis and Hicks families. More parent volunteers required, please contact Damian if you would like to be involved.
