“In wonder and awe me marvel in your creation God -

the abundant treasures with which you have blessed us.”

Dear Parents and Caregivers

For the last two weeks I have been driving around Sicily with two of my daughters, who I must say, make wonderful travelling companions. While my eight year old grand daughter proclaims that her heart lies in Paris, mine has a definite affinity with Italy. The history, the architecture, the incredible decoration in its churches, the coffee, the European breakfasts, the people, the way they drive and park their cars!! - I love it all.

Tuesday morning the School Board met with the CEWA Capital Funding Panel to put our case for the funding of Stage 8b, which encompasses the extension of the hall, alterations to the reception and sick bay and the demolition of the current Pre Kindy to PP range of rooms. We will know the outcome of this application sometime in August.

I thank our dedicated Board members for giving of their time to attend this meeting as I believe that it sent a powerful message regarding the school community's commitment to its school's activities in general and its current development in particular.

Federal Budget
I read on the ABC website an article about the proposed Commonwealth funding plans for schools. Included in the article was a link to a calculator that purportedly shows the budget's proposed impact on each school in the country. It suggests that OLG will benefit as a result of the proposed changes but it is the Catholic system in WA that gets all the government funding allotted to its schools and it is CEWA (Catholic Education WA) that then apportions money, from that central pool, to its schools according to CEWA's own formula that takes into account our systemic priorities.

Belated Congratulations
• To all the mothers in our school community on last Sunday's celebration of their centrality to family life.
• To the P and F on the success of the Mothers' Day morning tea and gift market.
• To our inter-school swimming team on their success.
• To Mrs Schenk on becoming a grandmother again.

Building Update
Thanks to our PR person, Carolyn Gammage, you will see the images of the current and future building program as you enter the school building area. Should you have any questions regarding the program just ask.

Leavers Shirts
Our Year Six students will receive these in the coming days after the last of the order has been delivered.

God bless

Chris Kenworthy

Kiss N'Drive is operating and has been successful in reducing student risk and traffic flow.
Unfortunately, some parents are using the car park adjacent to the Church and at the base of the school ramp, as a Kiss N'Drive. This is dangerous for the students, inconsiderate to other drivers and not good practice.
Students are to be collected at the top of the ramp and accompanied to the car. Students are not to run down to the Fig tree to wait for their car to pass and stop before jumping in.

Teresa Wandek

Our sincere condolences to Gus Darch (6G) and family on the sad passing of Bede.

Sr Joseph Hero of Week May 2017

Hero of the Week, was awarded to Sr Joseph for cleaning the grafitti from the school grounds.

Jacob Dimond – Year 2 Blue – Drum Student

“Well, I think that drumming is good, I just need to keep practising to get better each day. I get to use up lots of energy when I play the drums. I also just like my drum teacher! She is so good at playing the drums. She has good Aboriginal music, which I like, and she is wonderful at teaching me! She can turn the pages of my book without it closing!”

 Jacob Dimond Drums 2017

“Our son Jacob is loving his drum lessons! We thought we would give them ago as it is one of the first activities he has expressed an interest in. Like many little boys he can get restless in class. Drums provides a welcome distraction and helps him settle for the rest of his day. He even practises on pots & pans at home!” Debbie Dimond, Jacob’s mum.

Owen Buck Drums 2017

Interview with Owen Buck - Drum Student - Year 4W

The things that I love about drums is that the drums are fun, especially during the day at school!

I like playing solos to my teacher and I am preparing to enter the Catholic Performing Arts Festival this year. I will be playing at Trinity College for that.

It makes me feel happy and special because I have a special talent.

I have been playing the drums for seven years. I started lessons when I was three. My favourite thing to play is called Beats and Fills.

Drum Teacher Taryn

Taryn Cacciola studied percussion at the University of WA, where she graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor of Music Performance Degree receiving high distinctions in her 3rd and 4th year recitals.

Having been a member of the West Australian Youth Orchestra, the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra, the Defying Gravity percussion ensemble and the Australian Youth Orchestra, she now enjoys performances with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and the Fremantle Chamber Orchestra.

With her love of musical theatre she has performed in the pit orchestras for "Les Miserables", "West Side Story", "My Fair Lady", and "Godspell". And has performed in the backing orchestra for artists such as Andrea Bocelli, James Morrison, James Reyne, Angry Anderson and Grace Knight.

She has worked as a drummer with numerous Perth bands, touring Europe and the UK’s summer festivals and performing here at “An Evening on the Green” in Kings Park with American singer Jewel and Christine Anu.

A dedicated teacher, Taryn has devoted her time to young musicians, teaching at a number of private schools over the past 17 years. She is currently Head of Percussion at Sacred Heart College and Perth College, and is thoroughly enjoying teaching young students here at Our Lady of Grace.

OLG Run for Fun commences Term 2

“OLG Run for Fun” is a free running club where kids of all ages and fitness levels can come together before school to run and exercise in a positive and supportive environment. Parents and grandparents are also welcome to come along for fitness and quality time with their children.

We all know running is a great way to get fit, but it offers so much more. Kids who exercise in the morning are generally more engaged and focussed during lesson time. Running clubs enable kids to build friendships and have fun. Running builds healthy hearts and minds and brings joy to children.

The Running Club is run by volunteer parents each Tuesday and Thursday morning during school terms and will commence on Tuesday 2nd May 2017. It will include some warm up activities and games and there will be a couple of running courses, of different lengths, around Charles Riley Reserve to suit different ages and fitness levels. There will be no free breakfast or awards - it’s just for participation and fun.

As the Running Club is run by parents, students in Year 3 or below must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to ensure adequate supervision. A permission slip will need to be completed before your child can participate. Permission slips will be available for signing at the first session your child chooses to attend.

Days:         Every Tuesday and Thursday morning (starting 2nd May 2017)
Start time: 7.40am to 8.15am (volunteer parents will then walk kids to school)
Where:       Meet at the south east corner of the football clubrooms at Charles Riley Reserve
What to bring: Drink bottle, sneakers and energy. Eat breakfast at home first or bring something to eat at school after the run.
Cost:          Free
More Info:  Contact Damian Hicks on 0419 930087 or email
Volunteers: Bendotti, Nelson, Curtis and Hicks families. More parent volunteers required, please contact Damian if you would like to be involved.
